Poland has sought to strengthen its economic and security ties with the West. Its transition to a market economy depends upon trade links and eventual economic integration with Western Europe. One of Poland's first acts as an independent nation was to apply for membership in the IMF. Developing economic and political links with the Baltics, Belorussia and the Ukraine is also seen as important.
